The third game in Group A for the MLS is Back Tournament features the two favorites going head-to-head as New York City FC face Philadelphia Union at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. The top three teams from the six-team Group A will advance to the Knockout Round and oddsmakers have NYCFC -200 to advance and Philadelphia is -130

Both teams made the playoffs last season with NYCFC finishing first in the Eastern Conference in the regular season, two spots ahead of Union. NYCFC lost to eventual MLS Cup finalist Toronto FC and Union fell to Atlanta United. In their two head-to-head matchups last year NYCFC prevailed twice as they won 4-2 at Yankee Stadium in June at 2-1 at Subaru Park in the regular season finale.

NYCFC Outlook: Start Off Strong
NYCFC got off to a surprising start to the season in March with 1-0 losses to Columbus Crew and Toronto FC, both on the road. Keeper Sean Johnson made 13 saves in those two games while NYCFC managed just six total shots on goal.

The 2020 NYCFC roster is virtually the same as the 2019 one that amassed 64 points before flaming out in the MLS Cup Playoffs. Brazilian forward Heber scored 15 goals in 27 games last year while Alexandru Mitrita (12) and Valentin Castellanos (11) also got into double digits. Argentinian Maxi Moralez led the team with 12 assists while also scoring seven times.

Ronny Deila, who won two Scottish Premiership titles from 2014-16 with Celtic FC is the new manager at NYCFC. He replaced Domenec Torrent who left the club after the two mutually parted ways in November. Deila is still looking for his first goal while in charge of NYCFC and his first win.

Philadelphia Union Outlook: Make History
The Thursday night match will be the first for the U's with NBA superstar Kevin Durant as a minority owner. Jim Curtin's squad lost to FC Dallas 2-0 in February and drew at LAFC 3-3 in an exciting game March 8. Union led that game three separate times with goals by Sergio Santos Gomes, Jakob Glesnes and Brenden Aaronson but each time LAFC pegged them back for an eventual draw.

Last season the U's beat New York RB in the first round of the playoffs before falling to 2-seed Atlanta United in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Polish forward Kacper Przybylko led the way with 15 goals while the now-departed Marco Fabian added seven. Goalie Andre Blake allowed 41 goals in 26 starts while keeping four clean sheets.

In addition to Fabian the Union said goodbye to defensive midfielder Haris Medunjanin and winter Fafa Picault who did not fit into Curtin's 4-4-2 diamond formation. In their places Gelsner joined the team at center back while Venezuelan Jose Martinez and Slovakian 21-year-old Marej Oravec is new in the midfield. Keep an eye on the impressive midfield partnership of captain Alejandro Bedoya and Jamiro Monteiro as they make Philadelphia go.
