Washington Commanders Season Preview

31 March, 2022

The offseason started for most franchises roughly a week ago. The Washington Commanders, on the other hand, are amid their offseason. On February 2, the Washington Football Team, the franchise, changed its name to Commanders after almost two years. While supporters are divided on the new name, they can all agree on one thing: this squad has the potential to make a splash next season.

The Commanders have too many great players to finish below.500 again in 2022 after finishing 7-10 last season. Washington has a crucial summer ahead of them, with a gaping void at quarterback.

Expired Free Agents

According to Over the Cap, the Commanders are expected to have $31.9 million in cap space. They also have 32 players set to go on the open market in the coming months. However, most of them are bottom-of-the-rotation players who are unlikely to be granted a new contract. Nevertheless, there are a few key players among the 32 free agents.

Four players on the list played more than half of the games last season. In recent years, Washington hasn’t been particularly active in re-signing players, but it does so when it makes sense. In early January, the Commanders signed prospective free agent Charles Leno to a three-year, $37.5 million contract extension, securing their left tackle for the next several years.

Brandon Scherff

Scherff has been on the franchise tag for the previous two seasons. Over the course of those two years, the experienced guard has amassed a net worth of $33 million. He has, however, missed 22 games due to injury in the last four years. During the 2022 season, Scherff will become 31 years old.

It isn’t easy to assume he and the franchise board would agree to a long-term contract after spending two years on the franchise tag. Despite how good a player Scherff has been on the field, the Commanders are expected to release him next month.

Casualties Caused By The Cap

The Commanders don’t need to make any unneeded layoffs this offseason since they have just about $32 million in salary space. They do, however, have a few players who will almost certainly be cut in the coming weeks.

Most of Washington’s leading players are on team-friendly contracts or are still on rookie contracts. Furthermore, according to Over the Cap, Washington only has four players with a cap hit of more than $10 million for the next season.

Ereck Flowers (Over $10 Million)

The Commanders acquired Flowers just before the 2021 NFL Draft. Flowers returned to Washington after a year away from the franchise. He is, however, in the last year of his contract and has no fixed income.

As a result, Washington will be able to trim Flowers without incurring any losses. Flowers played 16 games at left guard this season, but the Commanders may dismiss him and use the $10 million saved to find a cheaper alternative at left guard.

Targets for Free Agents

Washington already boasts a strong roster, with many key players on rookie contracts. However, they must address two issues this summer: the quarterback position and general depth.

Unfortunately for the Commanders, no franchise-caliber quarterbacks are available on the free agency market. So instead, expect Washington to concentrate on free agency to add depth and a trade or draft to solve their quarterback problem.

Houston Texans’ Desmond King

The Commanders signed Williams Jackson to a three-year, $40.5 million contract last year. While his first year with Washington had its ups and downs, the Commanders still needed additional assistance. In the previous two years, King has played for three different franchises in the league.

With the Texans, he had a career year in 2021, with three interceptions and 93 tackles. In addition, his three interceptions tied for his career-best and were his first since 2018. King’s flexibility to play several positions in Washington will be crucial, particularly if McCain is not re-signed.

Expectations for the first half of 2022

The Commanders are about to embark on a crucial offseason. They’re only a couple of components and a world-class quarterback improvement away from capturing the NFC East. Furthermore, if they sign a great quarterback like Rodgers or Wilson this offseason, they will be Super Bowl candidates.

The Commanders might return to the playoffs or wind up with a top-10 selection next year, depending on their changes this offseason. The quarterback position is the most essential of all. Fans may anticipate a miserable and challenging season if Heinicke is the starter this year.
