Following a 20-for-30 performance for 280 yards and two touchdowns against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud made history.
According to ESPN Stats & Information analysis, the performance made him the only quarterback in NFL history to have at least 900 passing yards, four throw touchdowns, and zero interceptions in his first three career starts.
None of Stroud’s teammates are surprised by his performance. Brevin Jordan, a tight end who caught a touchdown pass in the victory, identified the contest that ultimately convinced the Texans to select Stroud and dubbed it a pivotal moment for the team.
Jordan told ESPN that the Houston Texans’ victory over the Indianapolis Colts in their final game of the previous season was the best thing to have ever happened to the team. “We picked the ideal candidate. Wow, what a leader. He is a fantastic man with skill that was given to him by God. He’s unbelievable, dude.
Dolphins offense in history? Identical Cowboys? Bears first overall in the draft? Let’s overreact to Week 3 of the NFL.Graziano, Dan
The Houston Texans defeated the Indianapolis Colts 32-31 in Week 18 of the 2022 campaign. Due to this, the team’s position as the first overall pick in the 2023 draft was changed to the second spot. The first overall pick, which belonged to the Chicago Bears, was exchanged for wide receiver DJ Moore and four additional picks by the Carolina Panthers. In place of Stroud, the Panthers selected quarterback Bryce Young in the following round.
On Sunday, Stroud joined Cam Newton, the 2015 MVP, and Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert as the third quarterback to have thrown for at least 900 yards in each of his first three starts.
I’m surrounded by excellent guys, Stroud stated. “Nothing I can do without those guys up front battling, the receiver running the right route at the right depth, and [offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik] calling the right plays at the right time.”
After Stroud’s record Week 2 performance against the Colts, in which he threw for 384 yards, the second-highest total by a player age 21 or under since the merger (1970), only Matthew Stafford (422 yards) in 2009 surpassed it with his effort, the Week 3 output followed. Of all the players in Week 2, it was the highest score. The only other rookie quarterback in Texans history to pass for more yards than Stroud was Deshaun Watson in 2017 with 402 yards.
“Sky is the limit for C.J.,” declared DeMeco Ryans after his maiden victory as a head coach on Sunday. “He simply continues to work while keeping his head down. Young C.J. is a very modest person. Everything begins with the quarterback, and we have one who is doing excellent things right now. Every week, he gets better. And C.J. is dialed on progress every week, which is something I respect and love about him. He is not content. He has served as our offensive unit’s leader, and it is impressive to see a young man manage that group while getting better every week.
