Mariners Julio Rodriguez Sets MLB Record for Hits

20 August, 2023

After winning AL Rookie of the Year in 2017, Seattle Mariners star Julio Rodrguez may have been experiencing a sophomore decline a week ago.

True, regarding that.

With a fourth consecutive four-hit game on Saturday, Rodrguez set a Major League Baseball record of 17 singles in four games. Sarah Langs of MLB.com notes that he is only the second player in Major League Baseball history with four consecutive four-hit games, joining Milt Stock of the 1925 Brooklyn Robins.

The Seattle Mariners defeated the Houston Astros 10-3 on Saturday, with opening hitter Rodrguez going 4-for-6 with two runs and a stolen base.

On August 12, Rodrguez was batting.256/.319/.433 with 19 home runs and 27 stolen bases, which was a perfectly excellent performance but well below the expectations of most Mariners for a player who achieved prodigy status as a 21-year-old rookie.

Now, over the course of seven games, Rodrguez’s stats are.278/.338/.466, with 21 home runs and 33 stolen bases. It is fair to say that no hitter in baseball is currently hotter than Rodrguez, as he had four hits in the three games preceding his streak of four-hit games.

This strong streak has helped Seattle win five consecutive games, 13 of their last 16 contests, and 22 of 33 second halves. The 68-55 Mariners presently maintain a half-game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays for the third AL wild-card spot.
