The final game of the regular season for Charlotte and Washington could determine each team's final position relative to the play-in tournament. The Wizards are the only team that has yet to clinch a spot, but with a two-game lead over Chicago it's likely that Washington will finish tenth and qualify.

The Hornets are currently tied with Indiana but hold the tie-break advantage and are in eighth-place. A loss on Sunday could jeopardize that forcing Charlotte to win two games instead of one to make the NBA playoffs.

Washington could be without leading scorer Bradley Beal again. He will not play on Friday against Cleveland, but whether he plays or not there is reason to back the Wizards.

Game: Charlotte Hornets (33-37, 35-34-1 ATS) at Washington Wizards (32-38, 40-29-1 ATS)

When : 1:00 PM ET, Sunday, May 16, 2021

Where : Capital One Arena, Washington, D.C.

Current Line : OFF Total : OFF

Tough Season

Charlotte has had its share of struggles this season. Rookie LaMelo Ball appeared to be headed toward a Rookie of Year award then suffered a broken wrist. Ball has since returned to the Hornets lineup and has performed well. He is the team's third-leading scorer (15.8 ppg) and averages a team-best 6.2 assists per game.

The Hornets have been without Gordon Hayward since the beginning of April. He last played on April 2 in a win over Indiana. Hayward suffered a foot injury and it is still unclear as to when he will return.

For Washington, the big concern is Beal who has been nursing a hamstring injury. Beal averages 31.4 points a game, but he has missed the Wizards last two games and, as mentioned, will not play on Friday. Washington lost both games Beal missed. Both losses were to Atlanta.

The hook was on our side in our last pick! We liked the Heat ATS in our Bulls at Heat betting preview . Go take a look!

ATS Wizards

Despite the losses, the Wizards were able to do something they have become accustomed to over the latter half of the season - cover the spread.

Even without Beal in the lineup, the Wizards have still been able to keep games close. Washington's last five games have been decided by four points or fewer and three of those have been one-point games.

It's no surprise that the Wizards are one of the best teams in the NBA against the spread. They have the fourth-highest cover percentage at online sportsbooks - 58.0 percent - in the league with a 40-29-1 record ATS.

Hornets at Wizards Free Pick

Over their last 22 games, the Wizards are 17-4-1 ATS. Charlotte, on the other hand, has covered twice in its last seven games and hasn't covered a spread in each of its last five road games. A good look at NBA scores gives a crazy picture of their season.

Now, the Hornets have beaten the Wizards twice thus far this season, but both those wins came long before Washington made its move to get into contention to make the play-in tournament.

With their ability to score and with Russell Westbrook leading the charge, the Wizards will at least keep this game close. Charlotte will likely be a small road favorite giving Washington even more value as a home underdog. Back the Wizards.

NBA Free Pick: WASHINGTON down to -1.5
