Chiefs at Patriots (-7.5)

When: Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 8:30 PM ET
Where: Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Massachusetts

Analysis: The New England Patriots may be the league's defending Super Bowl champs and they may be kicking off their 2017 campaign at home, but for me, I'm going to urge you to back Alex Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs to cover the spread as touchdown road dogs, if not to necessarily get the outright win. Kansas City has an excellent defense that features at least four Pro Bowl caliber stars and they play a smart, if not explosive, brand of football on offense. More importantly, the Chiefs are 6-0 ATS in their last six road games and 5-2 ATS in their last seven games overall.

I know Tom Brady and the Pats are a robust 18-6-2 ATS in their last 26 home games, but I'm thinking this Week 1 opener is going to be closer to a field goal finish than a double-digit win for the Patriots.

I like the Chiefs to cover in a nail-biter.

Pick: Patriots 27 Chiefs 24

Cardinals at Lions (-1.5)

When: Sunday, September 10, 2017 at 1:00 PM ET
Where: Ford Field, Detroit, Michigan

Analysis: The Detroit Lions may have reached the postseason in 2016 while the Arizona Cardinals saw their two-year postseason run snapped, but I'm going to urge you to back Carson Palmer and the Cards to get the outright road win in their opener against Detroit for a handful of reasons.

First and foremost, Arizona has arguably the best running back in all of football in dual-threat star David Johnson, not to mention a future Hall of fame wide receiver in Larry Fitzgerald. More importantly, the cardinals no have some serious motivation to get the win in this ‘winnable' matchup as they look for nothing short of another playoff appearance this coming season.

I know the Lions are a stunning 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games in Week 1, but Detroit has also gone 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games in the month of September and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games against their NFC counterparts while Arizona has gone 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games in September and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 Week 1 games. Arizona wins outright.

Pick: Cardinals 27 Lions 24

Raiders (-1) at Titans

When: Sunday, September 10, 2017 at 1:00 PM ET
Where: Nissan Stadium, Nashville, Tennessee

Analysis: The Oakland Raiders may have won a dozen games last season and they may have one of the best young quarterbacks in the game today in Derek Carr. However, the Tennessee Titans won nine games last season and also have one of the premiere young signal-callers in the game in Marcus Mariota.

For this Week 1 showdown, I'm going to urge you to back the Tennessee Titans as a home underdog against an Oakland team they aren't very far behind as far as being legitimate contenders.

While the Raiders can put points on the board in a hurry, I'm expecting Tennessee's powerful rushing attack to grind down the Raiders' defense and take time away from their offense being on the field.

I know Oakland is 9-3 ATS in their last dozen road games, but Tennessee has gone 7-3 ATS in their last 10 regular season openers and will have plenty of motivation to get the win at home as they look for nothing less than a playoff berth in 2017.

Pick: Titans 31 Raiders 30
